Oricum

Oricum was an ancient Greek city at the south end of the Vlora Bay on the southern Adriatic coast between Epirus and Illyria. It is located near modern day Orikum. The site of Oricum is an archaeological park of Albania. This long-abandoned small port was a key location in Julius Caesar’s rise to absolute power. Oricum site covers an area of 5 hectares. It appears to have survived into the roman period, and was refortified in the Byzantine period as one of the principal strongholds of the Byzantine Empire on the Adriatic coast.

The ancient city of Oricum is rather unusual amongst Albanian National Parks as it lies within the confines of the naval base at Pasha Liman south of Vlora. Special permission is necessary to visit this site.
